U.S. men match best ever FIFA World Ranking

The FIFA World Rankings were released Wednesday and the United States continued its ascent, moving up from 11th to eighth in the current pecking order of the world's top teams.

The new standing tied the best ever ranking achieved by the U.S. men's team, matching its position in the No. 8 slot back in September of 2002, following its impressive performance in the World Cup.

The U.S. moved up the rankings after a brilliant performance during a 1-0 win over Mexico several weeks back. The Americans completely dominated the match against their border rival, who currently sit sixth in the rankings, but still needed an extra-time goal from Eddie Pope to pull out the victory in Dallas.

The United States, which has spent the past two-plus years ranked no worse than 13th, will next take the field on June 2 against Honduras in New England. The match will serve as a warm up to the 2006 World Cup qualifiers, which are slated to take begin less than two weeks later.     

 Brazil blazes to top of world rankings

 Five-time World Champion Brazil reclaimed its place at the head of the table, making the South Americans the top achievers in the new FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking.
